All subspecies, or perhaps only larutensis, may actually be subspecies of Large Cuckooshrike (Coracina javensis).
Differences in calls and morphology suggest that nominate subspecies and layardi may represent a separate species.
The following 8 subspecies are recognised:
nipalensis (Hodgson, 1836) - Himalayas from Garhwal and western Nepal east to north-eastern India (western Assam).
macei (Lesson, 1831) - Central and southern India from Garhwal east to West Bengal and Orissa, south to Travancore.
layardi (Blyth, 1866) - Sri Lanka (except north-western lowlands).
andamana (Neumann, 1915) - Andaman Is.
siamensis (Baker, ECS, 1918) - Myanmar, southern China (southern Guizhou, west, north-western and southern Yunnan), Thailand (south to Isthmus of Kra) and southern Indochina.
larutensis (Sharpe, 1887) - Peninsular Malaysia (from northern Perak south to southern Selangor and Pahang).
rexpineti (Swinhoe, 1863) - South-eastern China (Guangxi, Guangdong, Fujian), Taiwan, northern Laos and northern Vietnam.
