Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania [United Republic of].
Coastal region from south-eastern Kenya (irregularly inland to Tsavo) south, including offshore islands of Zanzibar and Pemba, to northern Mozambique (south to Mocuba); in south-western Tanzania west to Songea.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Has been regarded as forming a superspecies with Northern Red Bishop (Euplectes franciscanus ) and Red Bishop (Euplectes orix ).
Proposed subspecies rufigula (described from central Kenya), having some red on throat and breast, is considered no more than a variant.
