Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Scarlet-chested Sunbird (Chalcomitra senegalensis) and sometimes regarded as conspecific, but the two are ecologically segregated in area of marginal overlap in eastern Kenya.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
siccata (Shelley, 1889) - Extreme south-eastern Sudan, Ssouth-western Ethiopia (near Mega), north-western Kenya (including north-western shore of L Turkana), and plateau regions of Somalia.
hunteri (Shelley, 1889) - Southern and east-central Ethiopia, Kenya (except north-west) and extreme north-eastern Tanzania.
