Subspecies

Alternatively, may form a superspecies with Buff-throated Sunbird (Chalcomitra adelberti).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • crossensis Serle, 1963   -  Extreme south-eastern Nigeria and south-western Cameroon (Mamfe and to west of Bamenda).
  • stangerii (Jardine, 1842)   -  Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
  • rubescens (Vieillot, 1819)   -  Central and southern Cameroon, south-west, south-eastern and northern Central African Republic and southern borders of Sudan south to northern Angola, north-western Zambia, southern and eastern DRCongo, Uganda, western Kenya and north-western Tanzania.
