Forms a superspecies with Western Violet-backed Sunbird (Anthreptes longuemarei), Uluguru Violet-backed Sunbird (Anthreptes neglectus) and Violet-tailed Sunbird (Anthreptes aurantius).

Two proposed subspecies, neumanni (described from Afgoi, in southern Somalia) and barbouri (from Dodoma, in Tanzania), are both considered insufficiently differentiated from birds elsewhere in range.
