Possibly forms a superspecies with Horsfield's Bushlark (Mirafra javanica), Singing Lark (Mirafra cantillans), Monotonous Lark (Mirafra passerina) and Melodious Lark (Mirafra cheniana).

Isolated population in south-western Tanzania originally separated as subspecies rukwensis, considered unwarranted.
