Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation due to expanding human population is the main threat.

Voice
The song is a strident, musical, well-synchronised duet, each pair member producing alternate notes. In its complexity it is atypical of the genus Apalis.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Sharpe's Apalis (Apalis sharpii), Buff-throated Apalis (Apalis rufogularis) and Kungwe Apalis (Apalis argentea). Racial identity of birds recently recorded in south-western Kenya uncertain, tentatively included in subspecies stronachi. Further study is required.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
karamojae (van Someren, 1921) - Locally in north-eastern Uganda (Kanatorok, in Kidepo Valley, and Mt Moroto, Mt Kamalinga and Mt Kadam).
stronachi Stuart & Collar, 1985 - Northern Tanzania (Wembere Steppes, Serengeti) and south-western Kenya (Kedong Valley).
Similar Species
Grey Tit-Flycatcher (Fraseria plumbea) which lacks white in wing, with white in tail confined to tip.
