Habitat
Forest undergrowth, thickets and degraded forest with some remaining canopy. From 1,600 - 2,200 m.

Range (Guide)

Tanzania [United Republic of] (B).

Western Usambara Mts, in north-eastern Tanzania.

Population
Estimated population is 28,000 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat destruction and fragmentation through wood extraction, encroachment of agriculture is the main threat.

Subspecies
Formerly allocated to genus Dryocichloides along with Iringa Akalat (Sheppardia lowei), with which was at one time considered conspecific. Has also been placed in Alethe. Biomolecular studies suggest that separate generic status for these and several other species may be appropriate.
