Forms superspecies with White Helmet-shrike (Prionops plumatus), and Yellow-crested Helmetshrike (Prionops alberti) possibly part of same group.

Similar Species
Subspecies policephalus of White Helmet-shrike (Prionops plumatus) is similar but smaller, has yellow eye wattles and a white, not grey crest.
