Subspecies
Recent molecular research indicates that this species constitutes a more recent branch within the genus than do Mountain Sooty Boubou (Laniarius poensis) and Fuelleborn's Boubou (Laniarius fuelleborni) and far more recent one than Lowland Sooty Boubou (Laniarius leucorhynchus). Subspecies degener intergrades with nominate in coastal regions, southern Kenya and north-eastern Tanzania (east of Mt Kilimanjaro).
Proposed subspecies atrocoeruleus (from north-eastern Ethiopia and northern Somalia) synonymized with nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
funebris (Hartlaub, 1863) - North-western Somalia and south through central Ethiopia to south-eastern Sudan, south-western and extreme eastern Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
degener Hilgert, 1912 - Central and southern Ethiopia and southern Somalia, south-eastern Kenya and north-eastern Tanzania (east of Mt Kilimanjaro).
