Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Brown-crowned Tchagra (Tchagra australis) and Brown-crowned Tchagra (Tchagra australis). Has hybridized with Brown-crowned Tchagra (Tchagra australis).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

jamesi (Shelley, 1885) - Extreme south-eastern Sudan, north-eastern Uganda, southern Ethiopia, Somalia, northern and eastern Kenya (except coast) and extreme north-eastern Tanzania.
mandanus (Neumann, 1903) - Islands of Lamu and Manda and adjacent Kenya coast (west to Witu and R Tana delta).
