Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Yellow Flycatcher (Erythrocercus holochlorus) and Chestnut-capped Flycatcher (Erythrocercus mccallii). Subspecies thomsoni intergrades with francisi in Lisungwe Valley (Malawi).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
thomsoni Shelley, 1882 - Southern Tanzania south to southern Malawi and northern Mozambique (south to R Lurio).
livingstonei Gray, 1870 - Southern Zambia, Zambezi Valley, northern Zimbabwe and north-western Mozambique.
francisi Sclater, WL, 1898 - Southern Malawi south to north-eastern Zimbabwe (R Mazowe and R Ruenya) and southern Mozambique.
