Subspecies
Despite being green-headed, this species is considered to be part of the "African black-headed group" along with Sao Tome Oriole (Oriolus crassirostris ), Western Black-headed Oriole (Oriolus brachyrynchus ), Ethiopian Black-headed Oriole (Oriolus monacha ), Black-tailed Oriole (Oriolus percivali ), African Black-headed Oriole (Oriolus larvatus ) and Black-winged Oriole (Oriolus nigripennis ).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
amani Benson, 1946 - Patchily in south-eastern Kenya and eastern Tanzania.
chlorocephalus Shelley, 1896 - Southern Malawi and central Mozambique (Mt Chipperone).
speculifer Clancey, 1969 - South-central Mozambique (Mt Gorongosa).
