Habitat
Dry savanna. From 750 - 1,800 m.
Angola, Botswana, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Gabon, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania [United Republic of], Zambia.
Vagrant to Namibia.
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Emin's Shrike (Lanius gubernator).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- souzae Barboza du Bocage, 1878 - Southern PRCongo, south-western DRCongo and Angola (excluding west and south).
- burigi Chapin, 1950 - Rwanda, Burundi and western Tanzania.
- tacitus Clancey, 1970 - South-eastern Angola (Cuando Cubango) eastern to south-eastern DRCongo (Katanga), Zambia, Malawi, western Mozambique, extreme northern Zimbabwe and north-eastern Namibia, probably also in northern Namibia (Okavango) and northern Botswana (R Chobe).
