Very locally in Andes from Colombia (central and eastern cordilleras) south to north-western Argentina; also lowlands in western Paraguay, and scattered records from lowlands of south-eastern Peru and north-eastern and eastern Bolivia.

Subspecies
Possibly forms a superspecies with Dinelli's Doradito (Pseudocolopteryx dinelliana). Individuals from southern part of range appear to be larger than those in north. Further study is needed.
