Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Sombre Nightjar (Caprimulgus fraenatus) and Eurasian Nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus), and formerly considered conspecific with Sombre Nightjar (Caprimulgus fraenatus). In the past, birds of Angola occasionally separated as subspecies quanzae, but probably not distinct from nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
damarensis Strickland, 1853 - Coastal western Angola, Namibia (except coastal region), Botswana and north-western South Africa.
rufigena Smith, 1845 - South Africa, Zimbabwe and southern Zambia; possibly also southern Mozambique and southern Angola.
