Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Livingstone's Turaco (Tauraco livingstonii), Green Turaco (Tauraco persa), Knysna Turaco (Tauraco corythaix), Black-billed Turaco (Tauraco schuettii) and Fischer's Turaco (Tauraco fischeri), a complex of allopatric forms formerly treated variably either as a single polytypic species or as three, five or six species. Formerly considered conspecific with Livingstone's Turaco (Tauraco livingstonii) and Knysna Turaco (Tauraco corythaix), but vocal differences and analysis of chromosome banding suggest specific recognition more appropriate. Several subspecies described for eastern populations, including marungensis, loitanus and chalcolophus, but all of doubtful validity.
