Angola, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Malawi, Tanzania [United Republic of], Zambia.

Southern Zaire to south-western Tanzania and south to central Angola, southern Zambia and western Malawi.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Red-fronted Barbet (Tricholaema diademata) and Acacia Pied Barbet (Tricholaema leucomelas), and all have in the past been considered conspecific. All respond strongly to playback of each other's song. Known to hybridize occasionally with Acacia Pied Barbet (Tricholaema leucomelas) in southern Zambia. Fairly closely related also to Spot-flanked Barbet (Tricholaema lacrymosa).

No subspecies.
