Subspecies
Sometimes placed in monospecific genus Smilorhis. Kenyan population sometimes separated as subspecies kenyae, but normally considered inseparable from kilimensis. In past, subspecies bocagei of Lybius torquatus erroneously listed as a subspecies of present species.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
kilimensis (Shelley, 1889) - Central-eastern and south-eastern Kenya to north-eastern Tanzania.
leucogrammica (Reichenow, 1915) - Highlands of central and southern Tanzania. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, White-lined Barbet (Stactolaema leucogrammica).
leucotis (Sundevall, 1850) - Malawi and Mozambique south to Swaziland and Natal.
