Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist shrubland, high altitude shrubland, dry savanna, arable land.

Range (Guide)

Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda.

South-eastern Sudan east through Ethiopia to Somalia, and south to north-eastern Uganda, central Kenya and north-central Tanzania.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Grey-breasted Spurfowl (Pternistis rufopictus), Red-necked Spurfowl (Pternistis afer) and Swainson's Francolin (Pternistis swainsonii). Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus places present species in genus Pternistis with 23 other species. Various subspecies proposed, but variation clinal and validity dubious; infuscatus sometimes accepted. Hybridizes with Grey-breasted Spurfowl (Pternistis rufopictus) on edge of range in Tanzania.

No subspecies.
