Golden Parrotbill (Suthora verreauxi) [XC543741]
by Sunny Tseng from Taiwan, Chiayi County, Taiwan Province, Taiwan (call)

Subspecies
Initially described as Suthora gularis, but that name invalid, as preoccupied. Sometimes placed together with Spectacled Parrotbill (Sinosuthora conspicillata), Vinous-throated Parrotbill (Sinosuthora webbiana), Brown-winged Parrotbill (Sinosuthora brunnea), Ashy-throated Parrotbill (Sinosuthora alphonsiana), Grey-hooded Parrotbill (Sinosuthora zappeyi), Rusty-throated Parrotbill (Sinosuthora przewalskii), Fulvous Parrotbill (Suthora fulvifrons), Black-throated Parrotbill (Suthora nipalensis) and Pale-billed Parrotbill (Chleuasicus atrosuperciliaris) in a separate genus, Suthora. Has in the past been considered conspecific with Black-throated Parrotbill (Suthora nipalensis), but is very distinct morphologically. Subspecies craddocki has erroneously been listed for that species by some authors. In China, birds from Ailao Shan (central Yunnan) of uncertain racial identity, currently included within craddocki; specimens from Guizhou have sometimes been assigned to subspecies pallidus, but this seems unlikely from a geographical point of view.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • verreauxi (Sharpe, 1883)   -  Central China (north-central to south-central Sichuan, and south-eastern Shaanxi south to south-western Hubei).
  • craddocki Bingham, 1903   -  Extreme eastern Myanmar (east of R Salween) east to northern Laos and extreme northern Vietnam (western Tonkin, north-western part of eastern Tonkin), and southern China disjunctly in central Yunnan (Ailao Shan), eastern Guangxi (Yao Shan), southern Hunan and northern Guangdong.
  • pallidus (La Touche, 1922)   -  Mountains of south-eastern China (north-western Fujian).
  • morrisonianus (Ogilvie-Grant, 1906)   -  Highlands of Taiwan.
