Subspecies
Geographical variation slight, despite number of named subspecies. Nevertheless, future splitting of species possible on basis of vocalizations and genetic differences. Individuals of this species observed in central Yunnan and northern and central Guangdong (southern China) not yet assigned to subspecies.
The following 8 subspecies are recognised:
yunnanensis Swinhoe, 1863 - Northern Myanmar and southern China (north-western Yunnan, south-western Sichuan). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Yunnan Fulvetta (Alcippe fratercula).
fratercula Rippon, 1900 - Central, eastern and southern Myanmar, southern China (south-western Yunnan), northern and western Thailand and north-western Laos. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Yunnan Fulvetta (Alcippe fratercula).
laotiana Delacour, 1926 - North-central and central Laos and adjacent Vietnam (northern Annam). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Yunnan Fulvetta (Alcippe fratercula).
schaefferi La Touche, 1923 - Southern China (south-eastern Yunnan east to southern Guizhou and northern Guangxi) and northern Vietnam (Tonkin). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of David's Fulvetta (Alcippe davidi).
davidi Styan, 1896 - East-central China from southern Gansu and southern Shaanxi south to central and eastern Sichuan, south-western Hubei, northern and eastern Guizhou, south-western Hunan, extreme north-eastern Guangxi and north-western Jiangxi. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, David's Fulvetta (Alcippe davidi).
hueti David, 1874 - South-eastern China (south-eastern Anhui and Zhejiang south to north-eastern Guangdong). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Huet's Fulvetta (Alcippe hueti). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Huet's Fulvetta (Alcippe hueti).
rufescentior (E. J. O. Hartert, 1910) - Hainan I. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Huet's Fulvetta (Alcippe hueti).
