Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
akahige (Temminck, 1835) - Sakhalin, southern Kuril Is and Japan. Non-breeding south-eastern China and Taiwan.
tanensis (Kuroda, Nagamichi, 1923) - Izu Is and islands off southern Kyushu, in Japan. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Izu Robin (Larvivora tanensis).
rishirensis Kuroda Jr, N, 1965 - Rishiri I. (off north-western Hokkaido).
