Habitat
Woodland, mangroves. FRom sea-level - 1,800 m.
Bangladesh (B), India (B), Nepal (B), Pakistan (B), Sri Lanka.
Breeds in north-eastern Pakistan (Margalla Hills) and in foothills of Himalayas from western Himachal Pradesh (Dharmsala, Kangra) east to Sikkim and Bangladesh (has probably bred), and south to western and central India (south to Gujarat, extreme northern Karnataka, eastern Maharashtra and central Bihar); migrates south to southern India and Sri Lanka.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Blue-winged Pitta (Pitta moluccensis ), Fairy Pitta (Pitta nympha ) and Mangrove Pitta (Pitta megarhyncha ). Sometimes considered conspecific with Fairy Pitta (Pitta nympha ) and Elegant Pitta (Pitta elegans ).
No subspecies.
