Habitat
Breeds on grassy islands, cliffs and beaches. In winter, coastal wetlands and estuaries.

Voice
Very vocal, uttering loud guttural 'guwaa', 'ao' or 'gag-ag-ag'. Also laughing calls during aerial display.

Subspecies
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Herring Gull (Larus argentatus).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- mongolicus Sushkin, 1925 - Eastern Kazakhstan to Mongolia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Mongolian Gull (Larus mongolicus).
- vegae Palmén, 1887 - North-eastern, eastern. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Herring Gull (Larus argentatus).
