Subspecies
Formerly placed in genus Leucotreron and a later proposal returned all members of that group to Ptilinopus, but placed present species in subgenus Rhamphiculus along with other Philippine and Sulawesi forms Flame-breasted Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus marchei), Cream-bellied Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus merrilli), Yellow-breasted Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus occipitalis), Red-eared Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus fischeri) and Maroon-chinned Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus epius). Forms a superspecies with Maroon-chinned Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus epius).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • longialis (Manuel, 1936)   -  Lan Hsü Is (south-east of Taiwan) and Batan, Calayan and Camiguin Norte (northern Philippines).
  • leclancheri (Bonaparte, 1855)   -  Most of Philippine Is, except Palawan, Basilan and Sulu Archipelago.
  • gironieri (Verreaux, J & Des Murs, 1862)   -  Palawan (south-western Philippines).
  • taiwanus Ripley, 1962   -  Taiwan.
