Subspecies
Northern populations have been awarded subspecies phaea (Lan Yu Is and Calayan) and septentrionalis (Batan), but validity unclear. In such an arrangement the subspecies present in Taiwan is uncertain.
May form superspecies with Slender-billed Cuckoo-dove (Macropygia amboinensis ), Dusky Cuckoo-dove (Macropygia magna ), Andaman Cuckoo-dove (Macropygia rufipennis ), Brown Cuckoo-dove (Macropygia phasianella ) and Ruddy Cuckoo-dove (Macropygia emiliana ). All six sometimes considered conspecific.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
phaea McGregor, 1904 - Calayan Island (north Philippines).
tenuirostris Bonaparte, 1854 - Philippines, Taiwan and Lan-yü I.
borneensis Robinson & Kloss, 1921 - Northern Borneo. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Ruddy Cuckoo-dove (Macropygia emiliana ).
septentrionalis Hachisuka, 1930 - Lanyu Island (off Taiwan) and Itbayat, Batan and Sabtang Islands (north Philippines).
