Habitat
Subtropical and tropical high altitude shrubland, subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 3,000 - 3,600 m, occasionally up to 4,000 m.

Relationships uncertain. Considered by some authors to be most closely allied to Chlorospingus, but regarded by some others as belonging in family Emberizidae and possibly closest to Atlapetes. Molecular-genetic data indicate that it probably belongs in present family.
