Subspecies
Relationships uncertain. Believed to be closest to Tawny Pipit (Anthus campestris), but behavioural aspects suggest possible affinities with Long-billed Pipit (Anthus similis). Subspecies madeirensis sometimes subsumed in nominate. Birds from Lanzarote, described as subspecies lanzaroteae, considered indistinguishable from nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
madeirensis Bolle, 1862 - Madeira Archipelago (Madeira, Desertas and Porto Santo, reported also from Baixo I).
berthelotii Bolle, 1862 - Selvagens and Canary Is.
