South Africa from southern and eastern Northern Cape eastern in mountains to Mpumalanga, western Swaziland and Lesotho (Drakensberg); also, isolated population in north-central Northern Cape (lower R Orange).

Was previously sometimes thought to form a superspecies with Striped Pipit (Anthus lineiventris), but the two species differ widely in plumage characters and ecology.
