Subspecies
Sometimes considered conspecific with White-headed Wren (Campylorhynchus albobrunneus), but has totally different vocalizations. Proposed subspecies aenigmaticus (from south-western Colombia) of White-headed Wren (Campylorhynchus albobrunneus) sometimes included with present species. Probably a hybrid form.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
hypostictus Gould, 1855 - South-eastern Colombia and eastern Ecuador eastern across Brazil to R Tocantins, south to eastern Peru and northern Bolivia.
unicolor Lafresnaye, 1846 - Lowlands of eastern Bolivia and adjacent Brazil, northern and central Paraguay and extreme northern Argentina (eastern Formosa).
turdinus (Wied, 1821) - Eastern Brazil (Maranhío, and Bahia south to Espírito Santo).
