Subspecies
Broad-billed Fairy-wren (Chenorhamphus grayi) and Campbell's Fairy-wren (Malurus campbelli) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Malurus grayi following Beehler et al. (1986), Coates (1990) and Vuilleumier et al. (1992).
Isolated subspecies campbelli sometimes treated as a separate species, Campbell's Fairy-wren (Malurus campbelli), but differs minimally from nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- grayi (Wallace, 1862) - North-western New Guinea from Vogelkop east to Torricelli Mts, north of main cordillera.
- campbelli Schodde and Weatherly, 1982 - Mt Bosavi (south of cordillera), in eastern New Guinea. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Campbell's Fairy-wren (Malurus campbelli).
