Habitat destruction through intensive logging, human settlement, cattle-grazing, mining and coca and palm cultivation are the main threats.

Subspecies
Subspecies harterti may be synonym of nominate, owing to variable plumage, the two being geographically close, with no dispersal barriers between their ranges.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
rosenbergi Hellmayr, 1911 - Pacific slope of Colombia in central and southern Chocó.
harterti Chapman, 1917 - Southern Colombia in western Nariño (Barbacoas, Guaycana).
