Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Grey-cheeked Nunlet (Nonnula frontalis) and Chestnut-headed Nunlet (Nonnula amaurocephala). Has been treated as conspecific with Grey-cheeked Nunlet (Nonnula frontalis), and also with Brown Nunlet (Nonnula brunnea). Subspecies pallescens of Grey-cheeked Nunlet (Nonnula frontalis) has on occasion been considered to belong in present species, although geographically and morphologically distant.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
rufipectus Chapman, 1928 - North-eastern Peru.
ruficapilla (Tschudi, 1844) - Eastern Peru and western Brazil south of Amazon.
nattereri Hellmayr, 1921 - Southern Amazon Basin in Mato Grosso, northern Bolivia and northern Brazil (western Pará).
inundata Novaes, 1991 - R Tocantins, in eastern Pará.
