Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with others of genus apart from Brown-chested Martin (Progne tapera). Hybrids with Sinaloa Martin (Progne sinaloae) and Southern Martin (Progne elegans) recorded. Subspecies warneri often merged with nominate. Subspecies macrorhamphus formerly known as domestica, but latter name invalid, as preoccupied.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
warneri Phillips, AR, 1986 - Western Mexico (southern from southern Sinaloa).
chalybea (Gmelin, 1789) - Eastern Mexico (from southern Tamaulipas) south through Central America to Trinidad and northern South America (south to north-western Peru and, east of Andes, to northern Bolivia, northern Argentina and central and north-eastern Brazil).
macrorhamphus Brooke, 1974 - Central Bolivia and eastern Brazil south to northern Argentina (south to Mendoza, Córdoba and Buenos Aires) and Uruguay; migrates to northern South America.
