Subspecies
Sometimes treated as conspecific with Spot-breasted Wren (Pheugopedius maculipectus) and Maranon Wren (Pheugopedius sclateri), despite great differences in plumage and vocalizations.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
hyperythrus (Salvin & Godman, 1880) - Pacific slope of Costa Rica and western Panama (east to R Chepó, in Darién).
rutilus (Vieillot, 1819) - Northern and western Venezuela (coastal mountains from Falcón east to Sucre and Monagas, both slopes of Andes from north-western Lara south to Táchira) and Trinidad.
