Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Rufous-bellied Nighthawk (Lurocalis rufiventris), with which probably forms superspecies. Subspecies nattereri often considered a separate species. Population on Trinidad requires further study to ascertain subspecific status.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
stonei Huber, 1923 - South-eastern Mexico south through north-eastern Guatemala and northern Honduras to north-eastern Nicaragua.
noctivagus Griswold, 1936 - Costa Rica and Panama south to coastal western Colombia and north-western Ecuador.
semitorquatus (Gmelin, 1789) - North-eastern Colombia and western and southern Venezuela east through the Guianas, and extreme north-western Brazil. Also (probably this race) Trinidad and Tobago.
