Habitat
Temperate shrubland and forest. From 2,000 - 4,600 m.

Afghanistan (B) (NB), Armenia (B), Azerbaijan (B) (NB), China (mainland) (B), Georgia (B) (NB), India (B), Iran [Islamic Republic of] (B), Iraq (NB), Israel, Kazakhstan (B), Kyrgyzstan (B), Lebanon (B), Nepal (B), Russia (European) (B), Tajikistan (B), Turkey (B) (NB), Turkmenistan (B), Uzbekistan (B).

Vagrant to Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Jordan, Syrian Arab Republic.

NW, CS, eastern and north-eastern Turkey east to southern Caucasus, northern Iraq, west, northern and south-eastern Iran, and southern Turkmenistan east to south-eastern Kazakhstan (Tarbagatai Range, Dzhungarian Alatau and Tien Shan) and north-western and south-western China (north-western and western Xinjiang, south-western Xizang) and south to north-west, central and eastern Afghanistan and northern Indian Subcontinent (north-western and northern Pakistan east to central Nepal). Non-breeding also south to Lebanon, northern Israel, south-western Syria, central and south-eastern Afghanistan and north-western India (Punjab).
 
Population
Estimated population is 5,000,000 - 50,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Molecular-genetic studies suggest that this species is probably closest to European Serin (Serinus serinus) and Cape Canary (Serinus canicollis).
