Subspecies
Genus often subsumed in Nectarinia. Has been thought perhaps to form a superspecies with Orange-tufted Sunbird (Cinnyris bouvieri), Oustalet's Sunbird (Cinnyris oustaleti), White-breasted Sunbird (Cinnyris talatala) and Purple Sunbird (Cinnyris asiaticus).

Proposed subspecies butleri (described from Kajo Kaji, in southern Sudan) considered inseparable from decorsei.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • osea (Bonaparte, 1856)   -  Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, north-eastern Egypt, southern Syria, Jordan, western Saudi Arabia, Yemen and southern Oman.
  • decorsei Oustalet, 1905   -  Widely scattered localities at L Chad and in eastern Cameroon, Central African Republic, western and southern Sudan, north-eastern DRCongo and north-western Uganda.
