Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Przevalski's Partridge (Alectoris magna), Chukar (Alectoris chukar) and Philby's Partridge (Alectoris philbyi). Treatment of this species has varied considerably and has been considered to include Chukar (Alectoris chukar) and Przevalski's Partridge (Alectoris magna) in the past. Possibly hybridizes with Chukar (Alectoris chukar) in some areas and with Red-legged Partridge (Alectoris rufa), which is introduced in parts of France.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
saxatilis (Bechstein, 1805) - Alps from France to Austria and western Yugoslavia; Appennines.
graeca (Meisner, 1804) - South-eastern Yugoslavia to Greece and Bulgaria.
whitakeri Schiebel, 1934 - Sicily. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sicilian Rock Partridge (Alectoris whitakeri).
