Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Chinese Grouse (Bonasa sewerzowi).

Occasional hybridization reported with Willow Grouse (Lagopus lagopus), Rock Ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) and Black Grouse (Lyrurus tetrix). Complex taxonomy, with various attempts to lump subspecies, e.g. only four recognized: with styriaca, rhenana and schiebeli placed in rupestris; volgensis and griseonota in bonasia; kolymensis in sibirica; amurensis and yamashinai in vicinitas.

The following 12 subspecies are recognised:

  • styriacus (von Jordans and Schiebel, 1944)   -  Jura Mts, Alps, Hungary, Slovakia and southern Poland.
  • rhenanus (Kleinschmidt, 1917)   -  North-eastern France, Luxembourg, Belgium and western Germany.
  • rupestris (Brehm, CL, 1831)   -  Southern Germany, Bohemia and Sudety Mts.
  • schiebeli (Kleinschmidt, O, 1943)   -  Balkan Peninsula.
  • volgensis (Buturlin, 1916)   -  Poland and Ukraine to central European Russia.
  • bonasia (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Southern Scandinavia, Finland and northern European Russia to Urals.
  • griseonota Salomonsen, 1947   -  Northern Sweden.
  • sibiricus (Buturlin, 1916)   -  Most of forested Siberia south to Altai and Sajan Mts, northern Mongolia and northern Amurland.
  • kolymensis Buturlin, 1916   -  Extreme eastern Siberia, from northern Yakutia and Verkhoyansk Mts to Sea of Okhotsk.
  • amurensis Riley, 1916   -  Southern Amurland and Little Khingan Mts south to northern Korea.
  • yamashinai Momiyama, 1928   -  Sakhalin I.
  • vicinitas Riley, 1915   -  Hokkaido (northern Japan).
