Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry forest, lowland moist forest, heavily degraded former forest, rural gardens, plantations.

Range (Guide)
American Samoa, Fiji, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Wallis and Futuna Islands.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Genus name sometimes given as Aplornis.

The following 12 subspecies are recognised:

  • pachyrhampha Mayr, 1942   -  Reef, Swallow and Tinakula islands (Santa Cruz Group).
  • tucopiae Mayr, 1942   -  Tikopia, in south-eastern Santa Cruz Is.
  • rotumae Mayr, 1942   -  Rotuma I (north of Fiji).
  • fortunae Layard, EL, 1876   -  Wallis and Futuna Is (Horne Is).
  • brevirostris (Peale, 1849)   -  Samoa.
  • tutuilae Mayr, 1942   -  Tutuila I, in American Samoa.
  • manuae Mayr, 1942   -  Manua Is, in American Samoa.
  • vitiensis Layard, EL, 1876   -  Fiji (except east).
  • nesiotes Mayr, 1942   -  Niuafo'ou, in northern Tonga.
  • tenebrosa Mayr, 1942   -  Tafahi and Niuatoputapu, in northern Tonga.
  • tabuensis (Gmelin, 1788)   -  Lau Archipelago (eastern Fiji) and southern Tonga Is.
  • brunnescens Sharpe, 1890   -  Niue, east of Tonga.
