Subspecies
Genus name sometimes given as Aplornis.

The following 12 subspecies are recognised:

pachyrhampha Mayr, 1942 - Reef, Swallow and Tinakula islands (Santa Cruz Group).
tucopiae Mayr, 1942 - Tikopia, in south-eastern Santa Cruz Is.
rotumae Mayr, 1942 - Rotuma I (north of Fiji).
fortunae Layard, EL, 1876 - Wallis and Futuna Is (Horne Is).
brevirostris (Peale, 1849) - Samoa.
tutuilae Mayr, 1942 - Tutuila I, in American Samoa.
manuae Mayr, 1942 - Manua Is, in American Samoa.
vitiensis Layard, EL, 1876 - Fiji (except east).
nesiotes Mayr, 1942 - Niuafo'ou, in northern Tonga.
tenebrosa Mayr, 1942 - Tafahi and Niuatoputapu, in northern Tonga.
tabuensis (Gmelin, 1788) - Lau Archipelago (eastern Fiji) and southern Tonga Is.
brunnescens Sharpe, 1890 - Niue, east of Tonga.
