Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, heavily degraded former forest, urban areas.

Range (Guide)
Fiji, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna Islands.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

The following 16 subspecies are recognised:

  • maculosa (Peale, 1848)   -  Samoa (Savai’I, Upolu).
  • melanopygia Mayr & Ripley, 1941   -  Santa Cruz Is (Utupa, Ndeni).
  • vanikorensis Mayr & Ripley, 1941   -  Santa Cruz Is (Vanikoro).
  • modesta Mayr & Ripley, 1941   -  Northern and central Vanuatu (Espíritu Santo, Malo, Pauuma, Epi).
  • ultima Mayr & Ripley, 1941   -  Central Vanuatu (Efaté I).
  • rotumae Neumann, 1927   -  Rotuma I (north of Fiji).
  • mixta Mayr & Ripley, 1941   -  North-western and central Fiji Is (Yasawa, Naviti, Yadua, Ovalau, Mathuata, Mathathoni Levu).
  • woodi Wetmore, 1925   -  Northern Fiji (Vanua Levu, Kioa, Taveuni, Qamea).
  • pumila Neumann, 1927   -  Swestern Fiji (Viti Levu).
  • soror Mayr & Ripley, 1941   -  Swestern Fiji (Kadavu).
  • nesophila Mayr & Ripley, 1941   -  Lau Archipelago (east of Fiji).
  • futunae Mayr & Ripley, 1941   -  Wallis and Futuna Is.
  • keppeli Mayr & Ripley, 1941   -  Tafahi I and Niuatoputopu I (north of Tonga).
  • vauana Mayr & Ripley, 1941   -  Northern Tonga Is (Vava’u Group).
  • tabuensis Mayr & Ripley, 1941   -  Tonga (except Vava’u Group).
  • whitmeei Sharpe, 1878   -  Niue I (east of Tonga).
