First Described (Guide)
Bonaparte, 1850

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest, swamp forest.

Range (Guide)
Tonga (B).

Vava'u Group (Uta Vava'u, Kapa, Pangaimotu, Euakafa, Utungake, A'a) and Late I, in northern Tonga.
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Predation by introduced mammals is the main threat. If deforestation outpaces regrowth that may also become a threat.

Food
Insectivorous.

Voice
A clear whistled song that trails of towards the end. Females and immatures utter noisy chatters.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Listed in some earlier texts as "Pachycephala melanops" on mistaken assumption that present scientific name was a nomen nudum. A member of a species group that includes also Fawn-breasted Whistler (Pachycephala orpheus), Bare-throated Whistler (Pachycephala nudigula), Vogelkop Whistler (Pachycephala meyeri), Sclater's Whistler (Pachycephala soror), Lorentz's Whistler (Pachycephala lorentzi), Regent Whistler (Pachycephala schlegelii), Guadalcanal Hooded Whistler (Pachycephala implicata), Golden Whistler (Pachycephala pectoralis), New Caledonian Whistler (Pachycephala caledonica), Samoan Whistler (Pachycephala flavifrons), Black-tailed Whistler (Pachycephala melanura) and Golden-backed Whistler (Pachycephala aurea).

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Golden Whistler (Pachycephala pectoralis).
