Subspecies
Sometimes considered conspecific with Palau Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus pelewensis). Within the large Grey-green Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus purpuratus) species-group, these two have been considered to form a subgroup with Silver-capped Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus richardsii) and Red-bellied Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus greyi). Subspecies ponapensis formerly considered a distinct species, incorporating hernsheimi.

Proposed subspecies graeffei of Wallis and Futuna, and Niuafo'ou (Tonga) is probably a hybrid population between nominate and subspecies fasciatus; marshallianus included in hernsheimi.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • ponapensis Finsch, 1878   -  Chuuk and Pohnpei (central and eastern Caroline Is). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Pohnpei Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus ponapensis).
  • hernsheimi Finsch, 1880   -  Kosrae (eastern Caroline Is); formerly also on Ebon (Marshall Is). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Kosrae Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus hernsheimi).
  • porphyraceus (Temminck, 1821)   -  Small islands of Fiji (Vatulele, Makogai, Wakaya, Yadua, Lau group), Tonga and Niue.
  • fasciatus Peale, 1849   -  Samoa. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Samoan Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus fasciatus).
