Habitat
Dry valleys and some humid sites. From 340 - 2,200 m, and possibly down to 120 m.
Colombia (B).
Western slope of eastern Andes of north-central Colombia.

Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2010) and decreasing.

Food
Utters an excited 'grr-grr' when defending a territory against attack from conspecifics or other hummingbirds.
Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Rufous-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia tzacatl), but not, as sometimes suggested, with Cinnamon Hummingbird (Amazilia rutila) and Buff-bellied Hummingbird (Amazilia yucatanensis).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Rufous-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia tzacatl) which is very similar, but has dingy-grey lower underparts.
