Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 1,300 m.

Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Dot-fronted Woodpecker (Veniliornis frontalis) and the two sometimes hybridize, and have occasionally been considered conspecific. Subspecies tend to intergrade. Birds from extreme western French Guiana described as subspecies saturatus and those from eastern Brazil (northern Goiás, western Bahia) as transfluvialis, but appear to be no more than intergrades.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • modestus Zimmer, JT, 1942   -  North-eastern Venezuela.
  • fidelis (Hargitt, 1889)   -  Western Venezuela to eastern Colombia.
  • passerinus (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  The Guianas and north-eastern Brazil.
  • diversus Zimmer, JT, 1942   -  Northern Brazil.
  • agilis (Cabanis & Heine, 1863)   -  Eastern Ecuador east to western Brazil and south to northern Bolivia.
  • insignis Zimmer, JT, 1942   -  West-central Brazil.
  • tapajozensis Gyldenstolpe, 1941   -  Central Brazil.
  • taenionotus (Reichenbach, 1854)   -  Eastern Brazil.
  • olivinus (Natterer & Malherbe, 1845)   -  Southern Bolivia, southern Brazil, Paraguay and north-western and north-eastern Argentina.
