Habitat
Coconut plantations with scattered trees and scrub, dry lowland woodland and inland mangrove swamps, mesophytic woodland and brushy pastures.
Colombia (B).
San Andrés I (east of Nicaragua), in south-western Caribbean.
 
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and stable.
Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through convertion to agriculture and coconut-palm plantations is the main threat.

Voice
Three different types, unusual among vireos. Repetitive chatter of single-syllable notes, given 2-20 times. Two-syllabled song, 'se-wi, se-wi', uttered 1-15 times. Variable three-syllabled song. Both sexes have a single contact note.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
This genus and Hylophilus sometimes placed together in a subfamily Vireoninae. Closely related to eight other scrub-dwelling vireos, namely White-eyed Vireo (Vireo griseus ), Thick-billed Vireo (Vireo crassirostris ), Mangrove Vireo (Vireo pallens ), Cozumel Vireo (Vireo bairdi ), Jamaican Vireo (Vireo modestus ), Cuban Vireo (Vireo gundlachii ), Puerto Rican Vireo (Vireo latimeri ) and Flat-billed Vireo (Vireo nanus ). Sometimes treated as conspecific with White-eyed Vireo (Vireo griseus ) or with Mangrove Vireo (Vireo pallens ), but differs significantly from these in plumage and vocalizations.
