Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Red-headed Manakin (Ceratopipra rubrocapilla) and Red-capped Manakin (Ceratopipra mentalis) and has been considered conspecific with former, but the two occur sympatrically in north-eastern Peru (along R Ucayali and lower R Huallaga). Birds from eastern Colombia sometimes separated as subspecies flammiceps, but considered indistinguishable from berlepschi.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
erythrocephala (Linnaeus, 1758) - Eastern Panama, north-west, north-central and north-eastern Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad, the Guianas, and northern Brazil (north of middle and lower Amazon).
berlepschi (Ridgway, 1906) - Southern and eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, north-central and north-eastern Peru, and north-western Brazil (north of upper Amazon).
