Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Buff-bellied Hummingbird (Amazilia yucatanensis), but not, as sometimes suggested, with Rufous-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia tzacatl) and Loja Hummingbird (Amazilia alticola), given extensive sympatry with former. Formerly listed as Amazilia cinnamomea, but this name was unavailable. Subspecies graysoni has sometimes been considered a separate species. Validity of subspecies diluta has been doubted because of intergradation towards nominate birds. Name saturata is synonym of corallirostris. "Amazilia bangsi", known from a single Costa Rican specimen, is hybrid of present species and Rufous-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia tzacatl). Populations from Yucatan, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, formerly attributed to nominate, are more appropriately placed in corallirostris on basis of morphology and biogeography.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • diluta van Rossem, 1938   -  North-western Mexico (Sinaloa, Nayarit).
  • graysoni Lawrence, 1867   -  Is Tres Marías (off western Mexico).
  • rutila (DeLattre, 1842)   -  Western and south-western Mexico (Jalisco to Oaxaca).
  • corallirostris (Bourcier & Mulsant, 1846)   -  Southern and south-eastern Mexico (from Chiapas and Yucatán) to Costa Rica.
